Welcoming a loved one back home after a hospital stay can be a joyful and momentous occasion. It can also create anxiety for both the caregiver and the patient. As a caregiver, ensuring a smooth transition is crucial for their comfort and well-being during the recovery process. Preparing the home ahead of their arrival can greatly contribute to their healing journey. In this blog, I will discuss 5 steps caregivers can take to get the home ready for their loved one's homecoming.
Declutter, Clean and Organize
The first step in preparing the home is to ensure it is clean and clutter-free. A tidy environment promotes a sense of calm and can prevent accidents or unnecessary stress during your loved one's recovery. Focus on the areas where they will spend most of their time, such as the bedroom, living room, and bathroom. Prepare the bed with clean sheets and any protective covering that may be needed. Remove any tripping hazards such as children’s and pet toys and arrange furniture for easy accessibility. If your loved one already takes prescription medication, be prepared to organize their pill box with any new medications they may have been prescribed during their hospital stay and discard those that have been discontinued. Keep essential items like water, tissues, and medications within easy reach to minimize movement during the recovery period. In the days leading up to your loved one's homecoming, make sure to stock up on essential supplies. This includes prescribed medications, wound care items, and any necessary medical equipment they may need, like a walker, wheelchair, or medical bed. Also, gather everyday items such as toiletries, personal items and entertainment materials to reduce the need for multiple trips to the store. Do a Safety Check
Safety is of utmost importance when a loved one is returning home from the hospital. Conduct a thorough safety assessment of the entire house. Install handrails in hallways and near staircases if needed, ensure adequate lighting in all rooms, and check for loose rugs or flooring that may cause slips. Consider placing a sturdy shower chair and grab bars in the bathroom to prevent falls. Will your loved one be able to enter the home? Is assistance going to be needed to get them into the home? Will a temporary or permanent ramp need to be installed? Talk with the nurse, doctor, physical therapist and occupational therapist for their suggestions as to what may be needed.
Have Some of their Favorite Foods on Hand
A nutritious diet is vital for recovery. Plan and prepare easy-to-eat and healthy meals in advance. Often caregivers spent much time at the hospital with their loved one making home preparation challenging. Consider arranging for meal delivery services or asking friends and family if they could contribute some meals. Proper nutrition will aid in their recovery and bring them comfort during their homecoming. Hospital stays are not always a great culinary experience. Your loved one is probably looking forward to many of their favorite foods. Remember to read the hospital discharged instructions for any special diet restrictions.
Build in Support
As a caregiver, remember that you may not be able to manage everything on your own. Don't hesitate to seek assistance and support from friends, family, or professional caregivers. Having additional help can alleviate stress and ensure your loved one receives the best care possible. Having a loved one return from the hospital can require a lot from the caregiver. Remember your needs as a caregiver too.
Provide a Listening Ear
Recovering from a hospital stay can be emotionally challenging for your loved one. Create an open and supportive environment for them to express their feelings. Listen actively and empathetically, offering encouragement and reassurance. Your emotional support will play a significant role in their recovery and overall well-being.
Preparing a home for a loved one's return from the hospital is a thoughtful and caring gesture that can significantly impact their recovery journey. These steps will help create a safe, comfortable, and nurturing place for your loved one to heal.
